Quick Hit: Samsung’s New WQXGA Debuting This Week

Samsung is planning to unveil it’s new display technology which will offer tablets in the 10.1 screen size range to compete with the quality of smaller cell phone displays.

The new screen will feature a 2560 x 1600 resolution at 300 dpi which is only 27 dpi short of Apples patented retina display. Besides the super high-quality of the new screens, Samsung boasts that they will consume 40% less power than the tablet displays on the market today.

Samsung is expecting to make the displays available to manufactures later this year and there’s no doubt that the first device to offer it will probably be their own Galaxy tablet. Some people are speculating that this new display tech might make it onto the iPad 3, but relationships are pretty strained between Apple and Samsung so that’s kind of a long shot in my opinion. Plus there’s no reason not to think that Apple is working on their own super high-def display for that device. There have also been some complaints about PenTile displays, (which use a pixel layout like to 5 on a 5 sided die) making pixels a little fuzzy, so it could be a step back from the retina display I’m sure Apple is hoping to get onto the iPad 3.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see once this hit’s devices if those complaints are valid in this case or if Samsung found a workaround for that particular problem.

Seagate’s New Battery Powered Wireless Portable Hard Drive Coming Soon

Seagate made an announcement today that they will be bringing a battery-powered wireless external hard drive out for iOS and Android devices. Allowing wireless movie and music streaming in a small network for all.

The new hard drives will offer up to 500GB of storage, 5 hours of battery life when in use (25 hours on standby) and will allow users from multiple devices to access the same content at once over 802.11 b/g/n wireless channels. They’ll also be coming with USB 3.0 cables to help you transfer your data over quicker as well as to charge the device and all the necessary software to get your devices connected.

One of my favorite features is being able to access your content anywhere within range via your browser, which means that any device capable of running a browser will be able to find and watch or listen to whatever you store in the HDD. I know there are some other solutions for this, but it’s still pretty cool to have the function built into the hard drives firmware and not have to worry about really setting anything much up.

Well there you have it, a new wireless media home solution for you data junkies out there. The GoFlex Satellites will go on sale in July for $199.99 at the usual stores (Amazon, Best Buy, Tiger Direct, etc...) but you can pre-order them from Seagate now if you absolutely must spend money now. Pepsi Releasing New Social Vending Machines

PepsiCo made an announcement today that they plan to make buying drinks at their vending machines a much more social experience…I guess.

The whole vending machine looks pretty boring and I couldn’t find any videos that show it off, I did however find a video that shows Coke beat Pepsi to the punch as far as crazy touchscreen vending machines go:

 

But the above video is not social, like PepsiCo’s however. So what makes the new social vending machines so special? Well I’m glad you asked, PepsiCo decided that buying a drink for yourself, although nice, is not the way things should be. They’ve worked out a system that lets you send a gift to a friend. It works by you selecting a drink, entering your friends name, cell number and a personal text message letting your friend know you care (I suggest sending a diet coke with the message: Get it? to one of your chubbier friends, that’s a larf).

If a text isn’t good enough, you can even send a video right there! Holy #$% that’s awesome!

Regardless of whether you choose video or text, your friend gets a system code with instructions to redeem it at any PepsiCo Social Vending System (that’s what they’re calling it). When your buddy gets there the are given the choice of sending you a gift back, re-gifting your $2 present or just taking it and calling it a day,

One of the benefits of the system is that now PepsiCo’s data miners and their ilk a whole new wealth of data porn to sift through, and we all know how those guys love sifting. That way they can better mange distribution so that you don’t get any old, flat sodas, or other ‘treat’.

Yes I said other, PepsiCo apparently has plans to send out not just beverage machines, but all sorts of other types of delicious diabetes-giving edibles. That means soon you’ll be able to give your friends all sorts of candy treats like Doritos and whatever other crap PepsiCo packages.

Pepsi expects to roll out the machines later this year with some key strategic partners.

Toshiba Plans Self Encrypting, Crypto Erasing Hard Drives

 

Toshiba announced earlier this week that they plan to release self encrypting hard drives later this year. They’ll be joining the ranks of Samsung, Hitachi and Seagate who already have self encrypting hard drives in the market.

Toshiba's hard drives won’t just be self encrypting, they’ll also be able to be crypto erased, a feature that allows users to erase the key that allows the data to be accessed, keeping the data intact but inaccessible to anyone but an admin with a copy of the drive’s key. There’s even a feature that crypto erases the drive after a number of failed logins at the OS or on boot-up. Toshiba is the first company to offer crypto erasing on their commercial hard drives.

Besides the Self Encrypting, Crypto Erasing capabilities, the hard drives are pretty standard. The model type is MKxx61GSGYG, here’s some basic specs:

• Interface: SATA
• Size: 2.5 inches
• RPM: 7,200
• Encryption: AES-256

There are numerous benefits to having encryption taken care of at the hard drive level and the ability to crypto erase data, users can’t de-activate the encryption…ever so there’s no need to maintain any software and no chance of someone forgetting to encrypt sensitive data, crypto erasing allows data to be kept but inaccessible, and both happen at a level below the OS and even the BIOS so it’s pretty hard to get around without the proper keys.

The drives are going to be released in the middle of 2011 according to Toshiba.

Worlds Slimmest External Hard Drive Now Shipping

Seagate announced that their currently shipping out the slimmest external HDD their (hard disk drive) today. The GOFlex Slim

The hard drive is pretty damn slim, 9mm to be exact.  It offers USB 3.0 support, and spins at a decent 7200 rpm and will run you $99 for 320 Gigs. Although it says that it’s Windows and Mac ready out of the box they have announced plans to make a Mac OS X edition that will support HFS+, which will make it truly out of the box compatiable for Mac users.

That pretty much all, looks like a pretty sweet, solid built external SSD to me I might be upgrading soon.
