Acer’s 10-inch tablet, the Iconia A500 was made available for pre-order online and at Best Buy on Friday, and Best Buy will start taking in-store preorders April 14th. The tab is set to release on April 24th.

Here’s some specs on the Iconia A500:

  • Processor: NVidia 1-GHz Tegra 250 Cortex A9 Dual Core
  • Graphics: Integrated GeForce Graphics Chip (will include HD Gaming and 1080p video support)
  • RAM: 1GB
  • Storage: 16GB
  • Price: Wi-Fi - $500
  • Weight: 1.69 pounds
  • Screen: 10.1 Inches
  • Cameras: 2MP Front, 5 MP Rear
  • Include HDMI output
  • OS: Android 3.0
  • Battery Life: 8-10 hours

The Iconia A500 was shown in January at the CES show, however at that time it was running Android 2.2. Acer has upgraded that to 3.0 for the final release so there might be quite a big difference between the performance of the CES demo model and the finished product.

The question on everyone’s minds seems to be; can the Iconia compete with Apple’s dominating iPad 2?  I don’t really see how it will, although the specs are almost identical, the iPad 2 has the huge benefit of not being Wi-Fi only, which means that users have the option of either going Wi-Fi or connecting to Verizon or AT&T’s networks. That puts it in quite a few stores that Acer can’t reach.

I’m rooting for this little guy though, I’d love to see Android put up a better fight against iOS in the tablet market, but if this dosen’t succeed there’s always HTC’s planned EVO Tablet, that’s my next bet.
