Hackers Steal Marketing Companies Email List

The marketing firm Epsilon, which handles email marketing lists for some pretty big companies such as Chase, JPMorgan and Disney put out a brief statement saying that some of their clients email lists had been stolen.

According to the statement and others from the companies who had their customers emails stolen there was no intrusion into anything other than Epsilon’s email system, meaning that no credit card or other personal information was taken.  However companies with mailing lists handled by Epsilon are warning customers not to open any email attachments and warning that they might get hit with some abnormally high levels of spam.

The companies known to have been hit are:

  • Citi
  • Chase
  • U.S. Bank
  • Capitol One
  • Barclays Bank of Delaware
  • Verizon
  • Walgreens
  • Visa
  • Kroger
  • Marriott International
  • Ritz-Carlton Rewards
  • Brookstone
  • New York & Co.
  • TiVo
  • HSN
  • L.L. Bean

This is only the list of known companies, Epsilon is not saying how the attack happened, why the information was not encrypted or who they think might have done it. The only advice I can offer is that if your on one of these mailing lists check your email double before you even open it, your email is now public and there is no telling who might have it or what their intentions might be.
