Redbox Will Start Renting Games At It’s Kiosks Starting June

Red_Box

By: syeed@techsual.com

The kings of impulse movie renting, Redbox have decided to expand their kiosks to include game rentals this month. You’ll be able to rent PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii for $2 a day, which is a $1 more than what they charge for movie rentals.

Some are wondering if Redbox will be able to compete with Gamefly, but they don’t seem worried. They’ve already tested the waters by putting games in 5,000 of their locations for a few months, they received 1 million rentals in that little test, and I guess that was enough to give them the confidence to run ahead with the idea. Not to mention they’ve been in direct competition with Netflix for some time now and have been doing just fine.

I personally think it’s a good idea, even though I use Gamefly I wouldn’t mind being able to shoot over to a Redbox kiosk and rent a game for a day just to check it out. Although $2 a day seems a little pricey, they should make some kind of credit system where you can buy a week for like $1.25 a day and then just play all you want without having to accrue an annoying debt if you want to keep the game a little longer. It would save you from being locked into a Gamefly account that charges your credit card every month. On the other hand I don’t know if they have gift cards, but even if they do, your still not getting a per-day deal.

James Cameron and Vince Pace Launched a New 3D Tech Firm

You all know James Cameron’s work even if you don’t know the man, he spent years pioneering the bleeding edge 3D technology used in the cameras that filmed his blockbuster, award-winning, never ending  movie Avatar, brining 3D headaches to an audience that might have otherwise missed out and showing people that 3D can and should be taken more serious provided it’s not overdone or added as an afterthought. It was his direction and hype over 3D technology that I blame for this whole 3D craze. Besides that he also directed a few little movies like Titanic. Terminator 2 and Aliens.

Enough of the Cameron love fest, lets get down to it. According to a report on socaltech.com, Mr. Cameron and one of his 3D technology developing friends, Vince Pace, are now the proud founders of the CAMERON – PACE Group. The company is going to focus on new camera systems, service and other 3D movie making related tools, it will be based out of Burbank California and apparently their looking for tech-savvy employees to help make 3D movies of the future.

The firm has stated that although their newly incorporated their tech has been used in some of the most well-known recent 3D movies, such as Avatar, TRON: Legacy, u2 3D and Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Facebook Starting Movie Rentals?

darkknightfacebook586

Warner Brothers released an app that allows users to rent “The Dark Night”, with plans to roll out more movies in the coming months.

The movie rents for 30 Facebook credits or $3.00  users will have 58 hours to watch the movie. This is the first attempt at direct Facebook rentals and I can only imagine if it goes well it could be some competition to Zune, Amazon, iTunes and other movie rental services, however I think it’s going to be a while until it has the functionality to compete with Netflix.
