Bloomberg ran a story yesterday that says Microsoft is planning to stop supporting the Zune hardware. Microsoft still plans to support the software. However according to an anonymous tipster they will no longer be making video or music players.
The Zune was released back in 2006 and never could really compete with the iPod, despite Microsoft’s best attempts at making it a contender, the support was just never there. The Zune software however has been doing fine on the Xbox360 and WP7 and with Microsoft’s recent partnership with Nokia they have no good reason to stop supporting the software, at least it’s not bleeding money like I can only assume the Zune hardware was.
