U.S Government Announces New Terror Alert System

NTAS

The U.S Department of Homeland Security announced that they’ll be changing the terror alert system to a more social-centric approach. Finally getting rid of that silly multi-colored nonsense system that’s been in place for a while now.

The new levels of warning are simple enough, elevated for credible terrorist threats and imminent for a threat that’s coming soon. They plan to use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to release the warnings, as well as the normal media outlets currently in use.

According to Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano."This is to avoid the problem of cascading alerts where they simply keep adding one to the other to the other to the other and people don't really know what the current one is,"

So it seems like the goal is to make the system simple enough for everyone to understand and provide better information on what to do when the alerts go off.

I think this is a good idea the current system is way too convoluted, warnings can start at one level and bounce up and down depending on newly found information. On top of that there is no clear cut course of action for one to take once they’ve discovered the hard to find current level of warning. The new system seems to simplify the whole process and hopefully will cause less media overreaction from threats that start high only to drop when new Intel is released.
